This week’s feature is Nydia Parries, a Senior Program Manager. Getting her start nearly 15 years ago as a community organizer for public housing residents in New York City, she discusses her housing career and her motivation to improve affordable housing for the country’s most vulnerable.
How did you get into the affordable housing industry?
“My first job in the housing industry was working in affordable Multifamily finance for New York State in a post-graduate fellowship. I worked on policy, planning and underwriting Multifamily new construction and rehab tax credit projects worth millions of dollars,” Parries said. “After that, I designed and implemented a Section 8/HCV mobility program, and I have been working with PHAs and administering housing programs ever since.”
What is your role at Quadel?
“As a Senior Program Manager, I can have many project roles. Sometimes that’s managing teams, helping facilitate and organize outsourced management projects, developing staff training, or helping PHAs assess and redesign operations,” Parries said. “There have been times when I worked on eight different projects at once. Currently, I am focused on two projects: an HCV direct management engagement and a program operations redesign and improvement plan. I have long had a focus on program design and operational efficiency in my career.”
What do you enjoy most about your job?
“I love bringing analytical skills to a problem and developing and implementing solutions, Parries said. “Managing housing programs efficiently ensures more families have access to higher-quality housing. The knowledge that my work ensures more people can better provide for themselves and their families motivates me daily.”
What do you like most about working in the affordable housing industry?
“I like how expansive the impact of this work is. I chose to focus on housing because of my passion for eliminating childhood poverty. Many industries and government agencies serve low-income populations, but housing drives access to other facets of wellbeing,” Parries said. “Where someone lives affects their access to safety and job opportunities, health outcomes, and children’s access to quality education and opportunity. I am proud to be able to do work that positively affects so many aspects of the lives of the people we serve.”
