Our next feature is Jamaal Williams, Deputy Managing Director of Memphis Housing Authority’s High Performer HCV Program, where he provides leadership and support to TNQ staff to ensure operational excellence.

He discusses his job and what he likes most about working in the affordable housing industry below.

How did you get into the affordable housing industry?

“I began my career as an intern at the Los Angeles City Housing Authority while completing my undergraduate studies at USC. That experience introduced me to the impact and importance of affordable housing in our communities.”

 What is your role at Quadel/what do you do on a day-to-day basis?

“I serve as the Deputy Director of the HCV Program in Memphis where I oversee the Project-Based Voucher (PBV), intake, new admission, and recertification processes. I also focus on developing and implementing strategies to enhance customer service and overall program performance.”

What do you like most about working in the affordable housing industry?

“I truly enjoy serving low-income residents and helping them access safe, affordable housing opportunities that can improve their quality of life.”

What is your goal/motivation as a professional housing provider?

“My goal is to remain people-centric. I want to provide a high level of customer service that ensures everyone feels respected and welcomed. I also strive to maintain and achieve SEMAP High Performer status which reflects our excellence and accountability in program operations.”

What continues to surprise you about the industry?

“I’m often surprised by the ongoing misconceptions surrounding affordable housing programs and the challenges caused by fluctuating or reduced funding in certain areas.”

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned from working in this industry?

“One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of managing daily stress and balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders. You have to remember that you’re just one person. Focus on doing your best and maintaining perspective.”
